Although potatoes have been cultivated in Hungary for hundreds of years, this pest is present for less than 70 years. The fields were poisoned with enormous amounts of DDT to control this beetle. It is supposed to be native to Mexico and was feeding on other plants until the end of the 19th century. The beetle was taken to the Rocky Mountains by people where it first met with potato. It quickly took to potato, and began to reproduce abundantly. In Europe, the beetle became established in\u00a0Bordeaux in 1922 when the outbreak could not be prevented and the beetle began to spread. It reached Hungary in 1947 and has been a potato pest since then. DDT was an effective insecticide during the Second World War, for example, against the clothes louse, a vector of typhus.
